October in Las Vegas usually means cooler mornings, sunny afternoons, and the beginning of our beautiful fall weather. But this year, Mother Nature had something different planned. Tropical Storm Rachel brought an unusually wet stretch of weather to Las Vegas, Henderson, and surrounding Southern Nevada communities, delivering heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and flooding concerns during what is typically one of the valley's driest times of the year.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, moisture from Rachel began moving into Southern Nevada over the weekend of October 10–11, bringing widespread showers and periods of intense rainfall. Meteorologists had warned that Sunday would likely be the stormiest day, with rain continuing into the beginning of the following week. The storm developed in the eastern Pacific before its remnants traveled north, carrying significant tropical moisture into the desert Southwest.
Record-Breaking Rainfall Across Las Vegas
The storm delivered more than just a few scattered showers. On Sunday, October 11, Las Vegas recorded 1.08 inches of rainfall, breaking the previous daily record of 0.78 inches set in 2012. The rainfall also tied the city's all-time October daily precipitation record, originally established on October 12, 1947.
For perspective, Las Vegas typically receives only about 0.32 inches of rain during the entire month of October. That means the rainfall recorded on October 11 alone was more than three times the city's normal monthly total.

Why October Storms Are Unusual in Southern Nevada
While Southern Nevada is no stranger to summer monsoon storms, significant rainfall in October is less common. The official monsoon season ends September 30, and the region typically transitions into a much drier fall weather pattern. However, meteorologists explain that tropical systems moving north from the Pacific Ocean can occasionally bring substantial moisture into Nevada even after monsoon season has ended.
We've seen similar weather events before. In August 2023, the remnants of Tropical Storm Hilary caused serious flooding and infrastructure damage in the Spring Mountains, particularly around Mount Charleston. Although Rachel followed a different path, the storm served as another reminder of how quickly weather conditions can change in the desert.
What This Means for Henderson Residents
For those of us living in Henderson, Green Valley, Anthem, Seven Hills, and the surrounding Las Vegas Valley, storms like Rachel are a reminder that desert communities aren't immune to flooding. Heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm streets, intersections, drainage channels, and low-lying areas, even when the storm itself is relatively short-lived.
My take is this: A little rain in Henderson is usually something we welcome, but Tropical Storm Rachel reminded us that October weather can still pack a serious punch. Between the record-breaking rainfall, dramatic skies, and unusual weather patterns, this was certainly an October storm Southern Nevada residents won't soon forget.
