It's an exciting time for high school girls volleyball in Henderson and Las Vegas, as the 2026 regular season comes to a close and teams prepare for the playoffs. Several local programs have put together impressive seasons, and with postseason positioning on the line, every match matters. From Bishop Gorman's pursuit of another state championship to the battle between Foothill and Coronado for a favorable playoff seed, there's plenty for Southern Nevada volleyball fans to follow heading into the final stretch.
One of the biggest stories this season has been the continued dominance of Bishop Gorman High School. Despite graduating several standout players, including record-setting stars Ayanna Watson and Trinity Thompson, the Gaels entered the final week with a remarkable 28-6 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in the Class 5A Desert League. Gorman has won the last three Class 5A state championships and is looking to make it four in a row. The Gaels have already secured the Desert League's top playoff seed, making them one of the favorites heading into the postseason.
For those of us following Henderson high school sports, the competition between Foothill and Coronado is especially interesting. Foothill entered the final week at 21-9 overall and 5-2 in league play, while Coronado stood at 17-10 overall and 4-3 in the Desert League. Both teams were competing for the league's No. 2 seed, which comes with a home regional quarterfinal match and the opportunity to avoid Bishop Gorman until a potential championship meeting. With the teams having split their regular-season matchups, the final standings could come down to set-based tiebreakers.
Key Teams and Playoff Storylines to Watch
- Bishop Gorman (5A): Seeking its fourth consecutive state championship after securing the Desert League's No. 1 seed.
- Foothill (5A): The Henderson program entered the final week competing for the Desert League's No. 2 seed.
- Coronado (5A): Another strong Henderson contender looking to improve its playoff position.
- Liberty (5A): The Henderson school secured the Desert League's No. 4 playoff seed.
- Faith Lutheran (5A): Clinched the Mountain League's top seed with a 27-7 overall record entering the final week.
- Green Valley (4A): The Henderson powerhouse secured the Lake League's No. 1 seed with a 25-9 overall record and an undefeated 11-0 league mark.
- Sierra Vista (4A): The defending state champion secured the Mountain League title and a direct trip to the state quarterfinals.
- The Meadows (3A): Looking to capture its sixth consecutive state championship after dominating its league.
The Class 4A playoff picture is equally exciting, particularly for fans of Green Valley High School in Henderson. The Gators entered the final week with an impressive 25-9 overall record and an undefeated 11-0 Lake League record, earning the league's No. 1 seed. Sierra Vista, Sky Pointe, Legacy, and Rancho also secured top seeds in their respective leagues. The 4A state tournament begins October 27, with Sierra Vista receiving a bye into the quarterfinals on November 2. With so many talented teams competing, the road to a championship should provide some outstanding volleyball.
Another program worth watching is The Meadows, which has become one of Nevada's most successful girls volleyball programs. The Mustangs entered the final week with a 25-3 overall record and an undefeated 11-0 mark in Class 3A Southern League play. They've already won five consecutive state championships across the 2A and 3A classifications and are chasing a sixth straight title. Meanwhile, the Class 5A Southern Region tournament begins October 26, with the semifinals scheduled for October 28 and the regional championship set for October 31 at Legacy High School.
What I love most about this time of year is seeing the dedication and hard work of our local student-athletes pay off. These young women have spent months practicing, competing, and representing their schools, and now they have an opportunity to make a postseason run. Whether you're cheering for Foothill, Coronado, Liberty, Green Valley, or another Southern Nevada school, this is a great time to get out and support our local athletes. Good luck to all the teams competing in the 2026 Nevada high school girls volleyball playoffs!
