There's something special about high school sports in Henderson, NV. Whether it's a rivalry game between two local schools or an athlete delivering a performance that makes Nevada history, these are the moments that bring our community together. And Wednesday, October 21, 2026, gave Southern Nevada sports fans plenty to talk about. The latest Nevada Preps scoreboard featured an important Coronado High School girls soccer victory over Liberty, a strong showing by the Liberty girls volleyball team, and an extraordinary record-breaking performance from a Palo Verde soccer player.
Let's start with the Henderson matchup. The Coronado Cougars defeated the Liberty Patriots 2-0 in Class 5A girls soccer action at Liberty High School. Any time two Henderson programs face each other, there's a little extra local pride on the line, and Coronado came away with the shutout. Meanwhile, Liberty's girls volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over Basic High School, giving the Patriots something to celebrate on the volleyball court. It's great to see so many Henderson athletes competing at a high level as the fall sports season moves into its postseason.
The biggest individual story of the night came from Palo Verde junior Olivia Gastwirth, who scored an incredible nine goals in the Panthers' 18-0 victory over Cheyenne. That performance broke Nevada's large-school record for goals scored by one player in a single game. The previous mark was six goals, set by Reed High School's Kelsey Gomer in 2009. Gastwirth's nine-goal night brought her season total to 48 goals, along with 18 assists. That's a remarkable accomplishment, and it's the kind of achievement that deserves recognition well beyond her own school.
Wednesday's High School Sports Highlights
- Coronado girls soccer: Defeated Liberty 2-0.
- Liberty girls volleyball: Swept Basic 3-0.
- Palo Verde girls soccer: Defeated Cheyenne 18-0.
- Olivia Gastwirth, Palo Verde: Scored nine goals to break Nevada's large-school single-game record.
- Shadow Ridge girls soccer: Defeated Foothill 2-1.
- Arbor View girls soccer: Beat Bishop Gorman 5-1.
- Canyon Springs girls soccer: Shut out Chaparral 5-0.
- Las Vegas girls soccer: Defeated Desert Pines 15-0, with Alyssa Carrasco contributing four goals and two assists.
What I appreciate most about nights like this is the effort happening across all our local schools. From Coronado and Liberty to Basic and Foothill, these student-athletes spend countless hours practicing, balancing schoolwork, and representing their communities. Not every performance makes headlines, but every team has players, coaches, and families putting in the work. With playoff competition underway, these late-season games also remind us just how exciting Southern Nevada high school sports can be.
My take? Henderson has a lot to be proud of when it comes to its student-athletes. Congratulations to Coronado on its soccer shutout, Liberty on its volleyball victory, and Olivia Gastwirth on a historic night for Nevada girls soccer. If you haven't attended a local high school game lately, consider heading out to support one of our teams. It's an affordable way to enjoy some exciting competition and show these young athletes that their community is behind them.
